메튜 가족은 이들이 밤마다 나타나서 마을 사람들을 홀려 갈갈이 뜯어먹는 괴물이라는 것과 그 마을을 빠져 나갈 수 없다는 사실을 알게 되고 마을에 거하면서 저주받은 마을의 미스테리를 풀어 탈출할 방법을 찾게 된다.

말쑥한 옷차림과 말은 보통 사람과 같지만 이 괴물들은 마을 보안관 보이드가 발견한 ‘부적’을 매달아 두지 않으면 집을 뚫고 들어와 사람들을 헤치는 초인적인 살인 괴물이다. 또한 그것들은 사람의 마음을 움직이는 능력이 있어 그것들과 눈이 마주쳐 대화를 하면 홀려 문을 개방하게 된다.
해가 지면 집에 들어가 문과 창문을 닫고 가린 채 최대한 문에서 떨어져 밤이 지나가기 만을 기다리는 것이 마을 사람들의 유일한 생존 방법이다. 내가 만약에 이런 마을에 갇히게 된다면 생각만 해도 끔찍하다. 그래서 시즌 3가 기다려진다.

미드 프롬은 MGM+에서 만든 SF 호러 드라마로 청소년 관람 불가다. 시즌 1은 2022년 2월부터 4월까지 방영한 시즌 1의 반응이 좋아 올 4월 말부터 6월 말까지 시즌 2가 방영되었다.

스토리는 새롭지 않다. 한번 들어가면 벗어날 수 없는 저주 받은 마을에 갇혀서 밤마다 정체모를 괴물들에게 시달리는 공포물은 탁히 제목이 기억나지 않을 정도로 많이 본 스토리이다. 잔인한 장면이 등장하지만 그렇다고 별로 무섭지도 않다.
하지만 이 드라마는 미묘한 매력을 가진 드라마다. 미묘한 매력이란 저주 받은 마을의 비밀과 밤마다 나타나는 괴물들의 정체가 나올 듯 나오지 않고 끝나버리는 전개임에도 불구하고 짜증이 나거나 궁금증이 사라지지 않고 계속해서 생각나는 매력이다.
보통 이런류의 호러물은 어느 정도 지나면 시청자들의 궁금증이 조금씩 해결된다. 그런데 이 드라마는 시즌 1-2가 지나도록 저주 받은 마을의 비밀에 대한 단서가 눈꼽 만큼도 보이질 않는데도 인기가 여전하다.

이런 점에서 이 드라마는 우리나라 드라마와 정반대 기법을 사용하지만 동일한 효과를 만드는 드라마다. 우리나라 드라마의 특징이 무엇인가? 빠른 전개로 지루함을 해소하면서 이전 회차의 궁금증에 대한 단서를 조금씩 보여주어 시청의 흥미 절정에 도달할 때 드라마를 끝내 엄청난 궁금증을 남기는 기법이다.
그런 면에서 보면 프롬은 우리나라 드라마와 비교가 안된다. 하지만 빠른 전개도 아닌데 별로 지루하지 않고 시청자의 궁금증에 대한 기대를 채워주는 않는데도 계속 보고 싶다.

아마도 이것은 계속해서 새로운 국면을 이어나가 시청자들의 상상력을 계속 자극하는 치밀한 스토리 진행 때문이 아닌가 한다. 앞으로 어떤 전개를 보일지 미리 예측이 안되기 때문에 시청에 대한 흥미가 사라지지 않고 오히려 더 커지는 것이 아닌가 생각한다. 그렇다면 작가의 상상력과 감독과 연출가의 실력이 대단하다 말하지 않을 수 없다.
시즌 3에서는 저주 받은 마을의 비밀이 나올지, 사람들이 괴물들을 퇴치하고 저주 받은 마을에서 빠져나올 수 있을지 무척이나 궁금하다.
Perhaps this is due to the detailed story progression that continues to stimulate new aspects and stimulate the imagination of viewers. Because it is impossible to predict in advance what kind of developments will unfold in the future, I think interest in watching does not disappear but rather grows. If that’s the case, I can’t help but say that the writer’s imagination and the director’s skills are amazing.
